We are business leaders, volunteers, family members and friends who are constantly changing hats. And every year when the holidays roll around, we step it up, cooking and cleaning and prepping to celebrate the holidays with the people we hold dearest. It’s no wonder, that at this time of year in particular, the nostalgia hits. Amid the craze, we find ourselves reminiscing through food, recreating the recipes passed down through generations, to share them with the ones we love. Here are three recipes you’ll find on the tables of three different Lowcountry women, including one of my own. GRANNY’S MAC & CHEESE I was married to my exhusband for almost 15 years and still adore his family…and their food. As a Jersey girl, I could cook a decent chicken parmesan, and I loved a good bagel. But those Southern favorites my in-laws loved eluded me, until my then-mother-in-law shared Granny’s Mac & Cheese with me. This casserolestyle dish is full of flavor and texture, and you’ll find it on my Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah tables. Seriously. It’s that good. Ingredients: 2 cups elbow macaroni 2 cups milk ½ stick of butter ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons dry mustard powder (Coleman’s is best) 10 ounces extra sharp cheddar cheese (grated from a block) 2 large eggs Pepper to taste Directions: Boil macaroni in salted water for 15 minutes. Heat milk, butter, salt and pepper in a pot. Dissolve mustard powder into milk mixture. Beat two eggs and most of the cheese into mixture. Save some cheese for the top.
