Veteran’s Day always falls on Nov. 11, and although the magazine will only be in circulation until our spring issue next March, recognizing our veterans is vital year- round. There are many ways to serve in or for the military, and we are proud to showcase a few of the veteran women based in Charleston to honor them as well as the many others within our community. The idea behind this cover comes from Mandy Willis, a media consultant with Mount Pleasant Magazine and HealthLinks Charleston. The beauty and expertise of the photo itself comes from Charleston-area photographer Mark Staff. This cover was shot on board at the USS Yorktown in Mount Pleasant. The four women featured here — from left to right, Summer Levert, Port Operations Officer in the United State Navy; Lisa Metheney, Senior Civilian / Deputy District Engineer for Programs and Project Management for the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District; Colonel Rebecca Elliot, Medical Group Commander / Director of the Defense Health Agency in the United States Air Force; Cara Lowry Sector Charleston Logistics Department Head / Commanding Officer of Enlisted Personnel and Budget Officer in the United States Coast Guard — are indisputably hard-working, intelligent and accomplished. By honoring the four women on this cover, we hope to raise awareness of the different experiences women have as they serve our country — and to demonstrate the nimble capabilities of women as leaders in the military and beyond.
