Charleston Women-Winter 2020
www.CharlestonWomen.com | www.ReadCW.com | www.CharlestonBrides.com CW I n preparing the Winter 2020-21 edition of Charleston Women , we tweaked a few things from the inaugural issue to further refine the message we want to deliver. We thought long and hard about “sections” — topics of interest to engage a wide spectrum of readers, whether they are retired, established in the workforce or just beginning their life journeys. Fortunately, women are so multi- faceted, it creates a kaleidoscope of content possibilities. Add all that to the approach of the festive season, and we are confident you will enjoy the articles prepared for you in this issue. For our main feature, the team landed a spectacular piece with the Cocktail Bandits, a pair of strong young women who are taking the spirits industry by storm, one #gentleladysip at a time. You’ll love reading their firsthand account about their rise to success on the heels of hard work, plus the fun and fabulous cover shoot and the tasty winter cocktail recipes, shared just for readers like you. Recently, we as a nation mourned the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and you will find a tribute to her through the eyes of South Carolina within these pages, as well as an original RBG drawing, created by award- winning artist Natalie Spinelli and published here first. And speaking of artists, be sure to dive into our Fer Caggiano article and read about her work on an exhibit featuring – talk about perfect – strong local women with important stories to share. It is our goal for each issue to bring you content that is meaningful and purposeful and interesting. When we consider content options, we ask ourselves and each other whether it’s something we would want to read. We hope this latest issue hit the mark for you. With the publication still fairly new – but flying off the racks – we are excited to continue our work on your behalf, and we always welcome your feedback. From the Team O ur fabulous cover this month, shot by Thomas Runion, features Johnny Caldwell and Taneka Reaves, otherwise known as “The Cocktail Bandits” — two local ladies who have taken their innovations to a whole new level and now lay claim to the first cocktail book written by Black women. We met up with the Bandits for this shoot at Vintage Lounge, at 545 King Street in Charleston. The award-winning interior in Vintage’s renovated historic building offered the exact vibe we wanted to showcase. We are also excited that our cover incorporates Google Lens. When readers download the Google Lens app on their smartphone and focus the camera — either Android or iPhone is fine — on the image of the Cocktail Bandits, they can watch our behind-the-scenes video capture from the cover shoot.
