Passionate about working with aging adults, Dina Mewett tried on many hats in that space, including working in non-medical home care, home health, hospice and retirement communities. Yet, she hadn’t yet found what she called her forever “happy place.” However, in 2019, fate took a turn when she joined Lutheran Homes of South Carolina in the marketing department at Franke at Seaside, opening a door she hadn’t even seen. By 2021, a marketing outreach role opened up at BeWell@Home, also part of the Lutheran Homes family. Mewett knew without a doubt that this was her next move. After only six months, she was promoted to program director, and in 2022, she moved into the role of executive director of BeWell@Home and BeWell Home Services. Finally, she had found her “happy place.” Now, Mewett is helping her members find their happy places, too, as BeWell@Home is the first and only nonprofit Continuing Care at Home program in the state. That means they offer wellness coordination paired with the best benefits of long term care insurance for adults who prefer to age in place at home, rather than in a facility. Working alongside two wellness coordinators and a plan counselor who will navigate, advocate and advise members for life, Mewett praises her team as the key components behind the program’s success. That’s because the wellness coordinators provide case management services by working with members daily to help facilitate services needed. Whether that means sitting with members at medical appointments, ER visits or through any health issues that may arise at home or at an inpatient facility, the wellness coordinators go above and beyond. This tailors the BeWell program to each individual person, because as Mewett explained, “No two clients have the same needs.” Despite the common misconception that Medicare will pay for long-term care provisions, Mewett said, “that is simply not the case.” That’s why she is on a mission to empower seniors with the knowledge they need to make educated choices and make a plan before a health crisis arises. Further, Mewett offers seniors the peace of mind that if or when the time comes, BeWell will cover care costs from day one with no exclusion periods, up to a maximum daily benefit — whether it be at home or in a facility if the need arises. BeWell also offers an exceptional supplemental option for those who already have long-term care insurance but may need help filing or managing a claim. For Mewett, the most rewarding part of working with BeWell is seeing how grateful the members are once they’ve navigated through a health crisis with the assistance of her team. Hearing testimonials like, “Thank you for walking this journey with me, I couldn’t have done it without you,” or, “You’re my guardian angel,” brings joy to Mewett’s heart, knowing that BeWell has not just met but exceeded its members’ expectations.
