The program was started more than 15 years ago by Mayor Joe Riley. 15 years later, Yo Art is teaching graphic design, photography, fashion design, coding and filmmaking. CW: What do the arts mean to you? YA: Art for me (Lori) is just about everything. It is an important language to express one’s understanding of the world. My background has always been in some form of artistic expression, namely architecture, fashion and fine arts. I have a master’s from UVA in architecture and practiced for 15 years before attending the Fashion Institute of Technology. After retiring, I became a full time artist. Art for me (Judi) unleashes the creative aspect of a person’s performance and can help one “think out of the box.” My background is in psychology. Professionally, I taught special education and then moved on to radio sales before becoming one of the original founders of MTV. CW: What is the November event? YA: The Gala at the Gibbes is a fundraiser modeled on The Met Gala. We will start with a cocktail party where guests will be photographed wearing their celebrity outfits. There will be a presentation describing Yo Art’s fashion design program, and we will have a fashion show of student’s work, with garments from Gwynn’s and accessories from Ibu. CW: How can we get involved? YA: The community can help us by purchasing tickets to the gala or contributing equipment.
