I set up a few informational interviews with designers in Charleston that I love, and I started researching academic programs. My research led me to a year- long interior design program in Florence, Italy.” CW: What inspires you? “When I am meeting clients for consultations, I feel particularly inspired when I come into a home that has a strong sense of character and history, and they want to meld that with something new.” CW: Tell us about how you grew up and what or who shaped you into the woman you are today. “My parents split when I was a kid, and my mom lived in Colorado while my dad lived in South Carolina. I flew between them multiple times a year on my own when I was as young as 8. This developed a sense of independence that has served me well on my chosen path, and I cherish it.” CW: Who influences you in your life currently? “I am influenced by a career coach that I worked with a couple of years ago. She helped me understand what wasn’t working and what I wanted, and I still rely on some thought processes that I learned from her when making career decisions today.” Katherine Brickell Designer Lowcountry Contractors 1204 Palm Blvd., Ste. CW: When did you decide to go into the business you are in? “I think since I was a little girl, I have always known I wanted to go into a business where I could transform spaces. This is mainly because of growing up watching my father, a builder in Columbia, do at the time what I thought was the impossible. I remember riding around with him in his work truck to different sites over the summertime and following the progress of a full kitchen or bath transformation from start to finish.” CW: What habits do you implement in day-to-day life that you attribute to success? “I try to keep a pretty well-rounded lifestyle. Work is a huge part of my life, but it’s not my whole life. I like to implement healthy habits along with the people and activities I love as regularly as possible. One of these activities is running. I have a pretty cute running partner named Oliver. He is a Brittany spaniel and an absolute nut!” CW: What inspires you? “I think what has inspired me most in my career has been art. I started taking a huge interest in art when I was a teenager. I was lucky enough to go to a school with an excellent art program that has incredibly talented instructors. My favorite aspect of my job is putting together different colors, textures and patterns to make them flow together similar to how a piece of art would.” Alexandra Little Designer Lowcountry Contractors 1204 Palm Blvd., Ste.
