On January 30, I embarked on a 7-week fundraising campaign with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Student Visionaries is a philanthropic leadership development program in which students across the nation compete within local markets under their desired mission pillar. All money the students raise goes to research to find better treatments, funding support and advocacy for patients and their families experiencing blood cancer. This cause is very close to my heart. My younger sister Elaina, and cousin Charlie, are Leukemia survivors. Watching their battle was heartbreaking, but watching their resilience was inspiring. Thanks to the efforts of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, our family gets to celebrate every moment with them. Our team name is “Team Tiny But Mighty,” inspired by what we called my sister when she was sick. This name reminds me of the little girl that I am doing this for and pushes me to keep going so children of the future do not have to face what she did. I have a goal to raise $30,000 for research for blood cancer by March 14. It is a lofty goal that I cannot reach alone, so I have 15 friends and family members from four states who have joined my team. Together, I have full confidence that we can make an impact, taking us a step closer to a world without blood cancer.
