One of the things Charleston is most known for are its beautiful houses, both historic and new. The fact that we represent the entire area and that every suburb has its own delicious architectural flavor, made the task even more difficult. Ultimately, we narrowed it down by being careful to choose a home that represented everything on our list: Charleston herself, the Charleston woman and the history of homes in the area. That is why we chose the Pechko home at 105 Bull St., a townhouse on Bees Row in Downtown Charleston. This particular home in the heart of our metro area, commissioned to be built by a female, Sarah Smith, is the most lovely shade of cream next to a feminine pink, was erected between 1853 and 1855 and has a history all its own. Therefore, 105 Bull St., shot by and with special thanks to Keen Eye Marketing, is the clear choice. The unique Italianate-style, three-level home was taken over by William C. Bee — for whom the row is named — during the Civil War for his blockade-running firm. However, Sarah Smith took residence after the war was over, and she was the first to live on the row — a Charleston woman ahead of her time with dreams of design, grandeur, family and sense of place — an original Charleston woman. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Saint John’s hotel (now the Mill House), each building has worked to keep its original stone mantels and plasterwork that can still be admired today.
