To say the least, this issue is a beautiful one, pictures of gorgeous Southern homes old and new gracing the pages (especially in our Charleston Women at Home section). It’s such a pretty and eye-catching issue that it’s important to remember that these buildings and triedand-true examples of our unique style didn’t create themselves. There are hosts of faces behind those gorgeous facades. There are our Charleston-area neighbors, creative designers, artists, architects, builders and historical figures. Also in that mix is the blood, labor and innovation of the enslaved people who were instrumental in building, shaping and maintaining many of the homes and replicas of such that we still revere today. We owe them a debt of gratitude as we look onto the things we see as beautiful all around us. Perhaps as they lie still and finally at peace — most likely in an unmarked grave nearby — our gratitude can seep into the dirt to where they finally rest. For more on this, flip to our Charleston Women in Philanthropy section for a remarkable story by Sarah Rose of how one woman’s family’s dark history now works to honor and preserve the African influences on Charleston culture — including the architecture. Much of who we are rests in the town in which we live, the things we eat and the brick-andmortar places where we rest our heads and raise our families. Behind all of that are the city’s creators. At its root, who we are is simply who we were. It’s the people who built the culture, who unknowingly started to knit it for us before we all added our own squares. That’s what this issue is really about. It isn’t about picking out drapery or tiles; it’s about why our porches are haint blue, why we use joggling boards for benches and how we know what color Charleston green really is. It’s about who we are. The Team at Charleston Women Magazine From the Team Stacey McLoughlin, brand ambassador. Lorna Hollifield, managing editor. Photo by Mark Staff Photography.
