As supportive as we are, we are all guilty of throwing a little shade on occasion. Whether it’s whispers of local gossip or rumors surrounding our favorite reality TV stars, sometimes we forget to take the high road. As Southern women, we are no strangers to that periodic passiveaggressive, bless-your-heart-style shade, and there’s actually one place where we shouldn’t shy away from it — the outdoors. Another thing GRITS (Girls Raised in the South) have to contend with more than others in cooler climates is the brutality of the sun. Don’t just give it the side eye, throw it some shade! As the spring and summer months approach, being outside will become a way of life, and the warmer temperatures will beckon you to get outdoors and enjoy the rays. The beaches, BBQs and a plethora of Charleston events will leave us all begging for summer to never end. With the heat on the rise, it is more important than ever that we practice healthy skin care routines. Too much sun can be no fun. Excessive sun exposure can lead to sunburn, heat exhaustion, dehydration, sun poison, skin aging and other negative consequences. As a reminder, your skin takes the superlative for the largest organ you have. It needs nourishment, attention and care, much like the inner organs of our body. None of us want to experience harmful skin conditions, and to avoid them, we must take some proactive steps. Be sure to cover your skin as best you can whenever possible. When it comes to sun exposure, modest is hottest. A simple foundation with SPF may protect your skin from harmful rays and have lasting benefits.
