Charleston Women Fall 2025

FOOD & BEVERAGE Throw the Ultimate Tailgating Party Southern Living's editor-in-chief shares his secrets BY SARAH ROSE During last year’s inaugural Food & Wine Classic, a ticket to the sold-out barbecue hosted by Southern Living at the Dunlin Hotel was a coveted prize. Editor-in-Chief Sid Evans shared his top tips for throwing what he called “the ultimate backyard party on steroids.” Set the Scene: “Outside is always best for creating a festive atmosphere with smokers, a grill and a firepit as the backdrop,” Evans said. “Live fire, open-air cooking draws people together in a casual, laid-back place to gather.” Establish distinct spaces — a TV area for the game and socializing spots for mingling. Curate the Soundtrack: Music sets the mood. At this year’s Food & Wine Classic tailgating party on Nov. 15, chef Sean Brock will spin records from his vast collection, including ‘60s, R&B, Motown and blues, while local folk duo Shovels & Rope performs. Subtle Team Spirit: Incorporate a nod to the playing teams through menu choices and signature cocktails rather than obvious decorations. Keep accents simple and let the food do the talking. Perfect Pairings: Fall calls for red wine or what Evans calls “brown water” bourbon cocktails like an old-fashioned to complement barbecue and grilled meats. “Tailgating is a celebration of Southern football culture, so don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with the planning process,” Evans said.
